OXFORD City’s 1500m star Hannah England has one major aim at Sunday's Diamond League meeting in Birmingham – to achieve the world championship qualifying time.

Fresh off the back of a victory in the Cork City Games on Saturday, the 24-year-old says she can’t wait to compete in front of a sell-out crowd at the Alexander Stadium in the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix.

Her time in Cork was 4mins 10.70 secs – so she will need to improve by around five seconds on Saturday to make the grade.

England said: “There’s always good competition in any Diamond League race, so doing this in England is really exciting.

“It’s great that the event is sold out. The Birmingham crowd is knowledgeable and I will try and play on the home advantage.”

With the UK Trials and Championships later this month, England is desperate to achieve the qualifying time for the world championships of 4.05.90.

She said: “I would love to have already got the time under my belt, but as it stands, I’ve got to keep my head in the game.

“The field will be a strong won, and that will hopefully mean a decent pace.

“It was really nice to win on Saturday. You don’t get many opportunities to win when you have Diamond League meetings.

“In terms of training, everything’s going really well, but I’m perhaps a little bit behind in racing terms, but I really want to get the qualifying time before the trials if I can.”

Meanwhile, former Radley steeplechaser Hatti Dean has confirmed she will not race in Birmingham due to continuing problems with a hip injury.

The 29-year-old, who also withdrew from last month’s European Team Championships says she is not fit enough to compete, and has taken the cautious approach.

Dean said: “It’s obviously a disappointment that I can’t compete in Birmingham.

“But I’ve had this injury for about five weeks now, and it’s taking longer than I thought to recover.

“I’m still able to train, but I’m having to take things slowly.”

Oxford City triple jumper Nathan Douglas, is a long-term absentee with an ankle ligament injury.
