FORMER Saracens and Bradford Bulls star Tevita Vaikona has joined Oxford Harlequins as player-coach.

The 36-year-old back and dual code Tongan international moves to Quins from Hull RUFC where he has been director of rugby.

“Tevita will act as a coaching consultant and when work permits, play in the centre,” said Quins director of rugby John Brodley.

“He will advise the club how to change their attitude and approach from amateur to professional, drawing on his experience as a 12-year rugby league professional with Bradford Bulls and rugby union with Saracens.”

Brodley added: “He will be starting a new job at Magdalen College School in September.

“We have good contacts with the school and I met up with Tevita at the England Saxons v Tonga Churchill Cup match.

“We agreed a role for him and our committee were keen to have him involved.

“We like to think he has a lot to offer and will give us a professional edge with a small p”.

Although Quins and Oxford have voted to merge, Brodley’s men will still compete as Oxford Harlequins for one more season.

He said: “We are still going through the due diligence process, but we don’t forsee any problems.”

The other main change to Quins’ staff sees second row Andy Boyle take over as forwards coach, replacing Craig Burrows, who has joined Grove as head coach.

Brodley will be assisted by backs coach and club stalwart Tony Edney.

Ian Maskell returns as fitness co-ordinator, while local referee Robin Heath will coach the lower social sides.

Oxfordshire Under 20 coach Jamie Lakin takes over as director of Oxford’s Leadbitter Academy.

He said: “I will be introducing two nights’ training per week, Tuesday and Thursday and demanding attendance from those who wish to be selected.”

Pre-season training begins on July 5 at the Southern Bypass ground. Any new players can contact Brodley on 07771 766390.
