Adam Cook took 5-28 and became the second Cumnor bowler to take a hat-trick this season as his side gave runaway Cherwell league Division 1 leaders Oxford Downs their first taste of defeat.

Following in the footsteps of Carl Thompson, who achieved the feat against Buckingham last month, off-spinner Cook reduced Downs to 71-9, having opened the bowling in a gamble that paid off.

A last-wicket partnership of 68 between Tim Sutton (62no) and No 11 Darryl Johnson at least gave the visitors an outside chance as they were bowled out for 139.

Amin Rafiq’s 3-32 made Cumnor work hard for victory, but Cook (34no) held his nerve as his side clinched a five-wicket win – their fifth in a row – and so closed the gap on the leaders to 14 points.

Great & Little Tew ended a three-match losing streak in style by beating title-chasers Shipton-under-Wychwood by four wickets.

Andy Harris (4-18) and Matt Taylor (3-20) dismissed Shipton for only 109.

Tew then fell foul of Graham Newhook, who took 6-24 to put the hosts in trouble, but Harry Smith (46) and Ashley Hubbert (33) steered them to 110-6.

Oxford 2nd were deprived what would surely have been a straightforward victory when rain cut short their match with bottom club Bourton Vale.

Skipper Richard Beer had taken 6-58 from 14 overs and Tom Geeson-Brown 4-40 from 10.1 as winless Vale were rolled over for 120, Max Arthur’s quickfire 34 from 26 balls the only highlight for the visitors.

Joe Jarvis then took 3-28, but Oxford would surely have won from 39-3 had the weather not intervened after 12.2 overs.

James Green was unbeaten on 74 in Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts’ 182-5 at Leighton Buzzard Town.

The innings had been reduced to 47 overs by rain, and a further intervention from the skies put paid to the match when Town were 19-1 after 6.3 overs.
