Following the postponement of yesterday’s Oxfordshire final of the Persimmon Village Cup between Shipton-under-Wychwood and Challow & Childrey, a dispute arose as to where the re-arranged game would be played.

The eagerly-awaited game was called off early yesterday morning after steady morning rain which was to persist all day.

Under competititon rules, the team, who were away in the original game gets to host the rearranged contest, which in this instance will be played next Sunday.

The problem arose because, Challow, who were originally drawn in the final, had to switch the game to Shipton as they were hosting Oxfordshire’s opening Minor Counties Championship game of the season against Wiltshire.

Mark Roche, Challow’s dir-ector of cricket, anticipating such a problem, checked with the organisers on Friday.

“I was told by David Currie, who runs the competition, that we should host any second game, because we were away in the original game, even though that was through our own choice.

“So as far as I’m concerned, the game will be at Challow next Sunday.”

Steve Brain, the Shipton chairman, was not happy hearing this, when I broke the news to him.

“I’ll have to check with the organisers, but if that’s the decision they come to, we’ll have to abide by it,” he said.

The reason for Shipton’s reluctance to switch the game to Challow, is that they have a arranged a President’s match next Sunday.

“We thought when we fixed the day, that if we reached the Oxfordshire final that we would be away and any replay the following week, would at least be on our ground.

“But with the final being switched to Shipton, that seems to have altered the arrangements, which we are not too happy about.

“It’s not as though Challow have had to travel to our ground in the process. But we will travel if we have to.”
