OXFORDSHIRE Under 17s gifted Gloucestershire 42 wides as they were beaten by 28 runs in their final warm-up match before the ECB competitions start later this month.

Oxon will need to rectify this and work on building partnerships with the bat after a disappointing response to Gloucestershire’s 171 all out.

After a first-day wash-out at Challow & Childrey, the match was reduced to a 60 overs a side one-day match, and after winning the toss, Gloucestershire chose to bat first.

They were quickly in trouble at 17-2 as Matt Taylor and Josh Megson took a wicket apiece with the new ball.

Wickets continued to tumble as Tom Nugent, and Ed Goggs helped to reduce the visitors to 84-6.

But despite this, most Oxon bowlers had their radars wrong as they sent down an extraordinary number of wides.

With several no-balls as well, extras was comfortably the top scorer in the Gloucestershire innings with 56 as they were bowled out for 171.

Taylor was the pick of the bowlers with 3-31, while Miles Hammond’s ten overs yielded 2-24 and Nugent’s seven overs 2-34.

Only Robbie Shurmer, who plays for Great & Little Tew, got to grips with the Oxon attack as he hit 39.

The wide count kept building in Oxfordshire’s reply.

Gloucestershire contributed 25 wides in Oxon's disappointing 143 all out.

Curtly Slatter top-scored with 25, while Megson and Hammond were the only other two to reach double figures.
