Batt School (Witney) were crowned Oxfordshire champions in the Chairman’s Cup Tag Rugby Competition at Horspath Road Sports Ground, Oxford.

Now in its 12th year, the A Section competition doubled as the county final for the first time with schools qualifying from partnership events which had taken place throughout Oxfordshire.

And Batt took the top honours, pipping Sacred Heart (Henley) by seven tries to six in the final of the festival, which featured around 460 youngsters from 39 primary schools.

The two schools will now go forward to the south regional finals at Newbury RFC on Thursday, June 16 where they will be joined by losing semi-finalists Sunningwell and Benson.

Winners there go on to the Tag to Twickenham national finals at Rugby School on Wednesday, July 13.

In the last four, Batt squeezed past Benson by seven tries to six, while Sacred Heart defeated Sunningwell 8-6.

West Kidlington A trium-phed in a high-scoring B Section final, beating St Francis (Oxford) by nine tries to six.

In the semi-finals, West Kidlington saw off Watlington by six tries to four, while St Francis defeated St Joseph’s (Carterton) 7-5.

West Kidlington were denied a double when their B team went down by four tries to one against Kirtlington in the C Section final.

In the semi-finals, Kirtlington defeated John Henry Newman (Oxford) by five tries to two, while West Kidlington defeated St Michaels (Steventon) 6-3.

Referees were provided by Henley College, with sports leaders from Northfield School (Oxford) helping out.

Prizes were presented by Councillor Patrick Greene, vice-chairman of Oxfordshire County Council, with the tournament having been founded by Brian Hook, a former county council chairman.
