OXFORD Veterans A have completed their most successful season – convincingly winning Division 1 of the Midland League.

Last year’s champions, Nottingham A, were pushed back to second place as Oxford ran out 7-3 winners in their final match of the campaign.

Oxford went through the whole season unbeaten, with only Stafford A holding them to a draw. Karl Bushell was the team’s most successful player, recording 15 wins from his 18 matches.

He was well-supported by Jeff Rigby, who won nine out of 12, Andy Misseldine (eight from nine), Alan Cherry (six from 12) and Neil Hurford (two from three).

Oxford Veterans B just missed out on matching their first team, finishing second in Division 2.

Hurford was the mainstay of their side with an impressive return of 12 wins from 12 matches.

Mark Scott (seven from nine), Tony Stead (six out of six), Nigel Taylor (five from 12), Glen Freeman (five out of nine) and Anders Markvardsen (two from three) all contributed victories, while Mike Aistrop also featured for the side.

  • OXON’S Janet Brown was crowned winner in the Over 60s doubles at the National Veterans Championships.

Brown partnered Linda Simpson – the same duo who recently won the Blackpool Grand Prix.
