A half-century from John Barrett helped Oxford ease to an eight-wicket victory over Amersham in round one of the ECB National Club Championship.

Oxford dominated the Group 12 match after winning the toss and choosing to bowl.

Amersham were all out for 143 in 36.4 overs, with captain Andy Viney scoring 50.

Spinners Joe Porter and Adam Leach were Oxford’s leading bowlers, taking 3-34 and 2-26 respectively.

Oxford then cantered to victory, reaching 144-2 in 25.1 overs. Barrett (52) and Dan King (42) put on 89 for the first wicket before Stewart Laudat (19no) and skipper Ian Crosby (12no) finished the job.

In round two, Oxford will face High Wycombe, who hammered Beaconsfield by 175 runs.

Banbury received a walkover from Potters Bar and will now face Stanmore in round two.

Vice-captain Jimmy Phillips said: “We received a walk over as Potters Bar could not raise a team. But they neglected to tell us until our team arrived at their ground.”
