South Oxfordshire Amateurs, the county’s premier wandering club, have launched an active recruitment campaign under the leadership of this year’s president, Dick Giles.

The club, which was founded in 1933, have a full list of 45 fixtures against strong opponents in Oxfordshire and surrounding counties, including 15 all-day matches and a dozen against schools within Oxfordshire.

In addition, there is an eight-match tour to Devon and Somerset in August.

“The SOA is the best-kept secret in the county,” said Giles. “Because we do not play in a league, our matches are not often reported in the press.

“Most SOA players play regular club cricket and play for us occasionally as an extra.

“Virtually all SOA fixtures are on weekdays and so complement weekend cricket, rather than competing with it.”

The SOA opened their 2011 season with a pulsating drawn game against the Defence Academy at Watchfield.

Chasing the hosts’ 240-3, SOA reached 237-8, thanks to a dashing 75 from Mark Wingfield Digby and useful contributions from Charlie Brain (42), Dick Tugwell (36) and Ian Lewis (34).
