Jack Midson’s Oxford United career is over.

But fellow striker Steve MacLean may yet have a future with the club.

The Scot is returning to his parent club Plymouth Argyle following his loan spell at Oxford, but manager Chris Wilder may still be interested in keeping the 28-year-old if he can.

Midson, who has been on loan at Barnet for the last six weeks, helping to stay in League Two, is among those players who will not be offered a new contract with the U’s next season.

Wilder announced his retained list for the 2011-2012 campaign today.

Midson, Djoumin Sangare and Mitch-ell Hanson will not be offered new deals.

Ben Purkiss, Simon Clist, Steve Kinniburgh, Matt Green and Sam Deering remain on the transfer list.

Released from his contract is goalkeeper Simon Eastwood.

As well as MacLean, young striker Ryan Doble, who has also been at Oxford on loan, is returning to his parent club, Southampton.

Wilder said: “I have had to make some tough decisions and this time of the season is never easy.

“We are trying to move the club forward and that means bringing in new and better players to help us push on and improve our league position.

“The process of bringing in new players has already begun and will continue throughout the summer to build a better, more competitive squad.”

The U’s boss had already indicated that Purkiss, Clist, Kinniburgh, Green, Deering and Midson were not in his plans.

Defenders Sangare and Hanson were tried out at the end of the season, and Sangare was unfortunate in that in his one and a bit appearances, he showed signs of real promise only to suffer a broken metatarsal.

Eastwood, 21, who joined Oxford from Huddersfield last summer, has been unable to break into the first team because of the form of Ryan Clarke, and it’s understood he was homesick down south, so he has been released to try to find a club nearer home.

MacLean was the only one of those in the group who played on a regular basis in the last three months of the season.

The former Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesdaystriker had some fine games in linking the play with his fellow forwards, but did not score many goals.

However, a number of clubs are thought to be after him.

Oxford may offer him a deal and it will be up to him to consider his options.

l FORMER U’s boss Malcolm Crosby was last night released by Northampton Town where he was assistant manager.
