Oxfordshire will need to defeat Dorset & Wilts by an improbable 84 points or more in their final County Championship Shield Pool 3 match at Bournemouth on Saturday to reach the semi-finals.

Oxon, who didn’t play this week, just about stayed in contention after Dorset beat Berkshire 33-26.

Their points difference is -45, while leaders Berkshire are on +38, but any win for holders Dorset will see them progress.

* Chinnor will face Harwell in the Oxfordshire Veterans Cup final on May 11 after beating Oxford Harlequins 36-12 in the last four.

Try doubles from Gavin Wade-Williams and Bill Deeley gave Chinnor the edge at Kingsey Road, with Ben Forward and Simon Pearson also crossing over and Conor Begley kicking three conversions.

James Knox and captain Lewis Taylor scored tries for Quins, with Steve Chadbone converting one.

The veterans final kicks off at 8pm at Iffley Road after the Oxfordshire Colts Cup final between Oxford Rugby and Banbury.

* Two former Oxford University players have been inducted into the International Rugby Board’s Hall of Fame in recognition of their contribution to the sport’s development.

Alan Rotherham and Harry Vassall are credited with pioneering the passing game and the three-man backline, which became widespread during the 1880s.
