Oxford United look like having a makeshift defence for their final game of the season at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

But manager Chris Wilder says he hopes the U’s can still sign off in style, as a way of thanking “the best supporters” in League Two.

Jake Wright hobbled out of last weekend’s 2-1 win over Lincoln with a hamstring injury, and he has been ruled out of today’s game.

In addition, Damian Batt (hamstring), Harry Worley (ankle), Ben Purkiss (knee) and midfielder Simon Heslop (fibula) have all been receiving treatment and are described as doubts.

That leaves Anthony Tonkin as the only fully fit regular member of the team’s defence, though Mitch Hanson, who has recovered from his head wound, could step in again as a centre back if required.

Despite there being little riding on this match for United, apart from extending their end-of-season unbeaten run to six games, Wilder’s team will have another big following in a sell-out crowd at the Greenhous Meadow.

The home sections will be packed with fans hoping Graham Turner’s men can better Wycombe’s result against Southend to clinch third place, and automatic promotion.

Even if they can’t, they will be in the play-offs, and celebrating a successful campaign.

“It’s a cracking match for everybody,” Wilder said.

“It would be great for the players, great for the supporters that are going, to really make a statement here on what we’re about as a club.

“At Barnet, we looked over to the far side and it was full. In a meaningless game (for Oxford) on a Bank Holiday.

“As I said in my programme notes last weekend, Bradford had their discounted season tickets, but the support we’ve had has been the best in the league.

“The backing they have given us is the envy of every club in this league.”

With so many injury concerns, the U’s boss is still slightly unsure what team he would be able to put out today.

But one player’s absence can mean another player’s big chance.

“Yes, there are possibilities and opportunities to take part in a terrific game,” Wilder said.

“It’s opened it up of late for younger players to have a taste of first-team experience, albeit not getting on the pitch, but getting in and around the first-team squad and everything that goes off on a matchday.”

The Shrews, who have won six and drawn one of their last eight games, have not conceded a goal for four matches.
