James Constable was over the moon to win the Andrew Knapton supporters player of the year trophy for the second time.

Oxford United’s captain collected the award before Saturday’s 2-1 win over Lincoln – the U’s last home game of the season.

And Constable (pictured) says because it is nominated by fans makes it all the more sweeter.

“It’s a great honour to win the award, and especially for the second time,” he said, having also picked up the trophy after his first season at the club.

“I’ve got a great rapport with the fans at the club, and for them to vote for me is just brilliant.

“I said last week when I signed my new deal with the club that the supporters were a massive part of why I wanted to stay here long-term.

“I have always had a fantastic relationship with them and long may it continue.”

Constable confessed that getting on the scoresheet at the weekend would have finished the day off nicely.

But instead he could only watch on as Tom Craddock – vying with him for the Golden Boot award – netted the winner.

“Yes, it would have been great to cap the day with a goal,” he said.

“I had one good effort that was well saved b y the keeper, but the team won, which was the main thing.

“We wanted to ensure that we gave the fans something to cheer in the final home game of the season and I think everyone would have gone home happy that we picked up the three points.”

On Craddock’s goal, Constable added, with a wry smile: “I was sure Alfie (Potter) had got it!

“Alfie did all the work, and I was going to go to him and celebrate and then I saw Tommy racing off and realised that it was him.

“But we have said all along that it doesn’t matter who scores the goals as long as the team wins, and that is always the case.”

Craddock’s strike means that both he and Constable have 17 goals this season, although two of Craddock’s total came while at Luton.
