There promises to be more thrills and spills when the Sandy Lane stadium in Cowley hosts the first round of the Pozzanni Grand National UK Flat Track Championship on Friday, May 6 (7pm).

The 12-race meeting will see regular flat-track championship riders from the UK and Europe, including 2010 Champion Aidan Collins, taking on guests from the world of speedway and road racing.

Top-flight speedway riders Eddy Kennett (Coventry) and Tyson Nelson (Ryehouse) will be there.

Kennett first tried flat track at the Shorttrack UK indoor event at Braintree a couple of years ago (as did Jason Crump this year), got the bug and now rides alongside the regular flat-track racers whenever his schedule allows.

Nelson’s Aussie background was in flat track, before coming to ride speedway for Len Silver at Rye House. He saw some practice sessions taking place and approached Shorttrack UK to see if he could get a ride at a club meeting.

A shorttrack rider lent him a bike, he took the meeting by storm, winning his first outing and is relishing riding at Oxford.

For road race fans, England’s very own TT specialist Steve Plater will be competing again in his spare time racing and a special guest from the USA, Dave Aldana, star of ‘On Any Sunday’ will also be there.

Aldana was well known in the 70s for road racing in his skeleton leathers with the big “A” emblazoned on his crash helmet.

He was a works rider and teammate to the legendary Barry Sheene, Eddie Lawson, Gary Nixon, Freddie Spencer and John Kocinski, and is relishing putting on a show for the fans.

The gates open at 5.30pm and tickets are priced at adults £12.50, concessions £9, juniors (12-15) £6, kids free.
