Dennis Rawlings, from Cowley, will remember his silver wedding anniversary for a long time.

To celebrate, Dennis and his wife Jackie drove down to White Acres Holiday Park in Newquay, Cornwall, for a break and a bit of fishing.

He decided to target the large catfish in the lakes, hoping for a fish of around five to ten pounds – but he never dreamt he would land a monster of 63lb.

Littlemore AC member Dennis, 45, had never caught or even seen a catfish before, but sought some advice on rigs from the on-site tackle shop and baited up with a large chunk of luncheon meat.

Having marked 25 years of marriage with a meal in with friends the night before, he was on the bank the next day and after 6pm, the big cat took his hookbait tied to 15lb line.

His 42-inch landing net was not big enough to land the monster, so he enlisted some help from a couple of anglers in the next swim who had a 56-inch net.

Dennis, who has caught pike to 24lb in the past, said: “It was my first attempt at cats, so I nearly had a heart attack when it came to the net after about a half-an-hour fight. My right arm was still shaking when I had a few beers to celebrate later that night!”

Now he is looking forward to his next trip, although this fish will be hard to beat.
