Oxford United manager Chris Wilder paid tribute to Damian Batt after the right back was chosen in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.

“He’s an improving player in his first year in the League, so we’re just looking for him to keep improving,” said the U’s boss.

“It’s good recognition for him from his fellow professionals.”

Batt was honoured by being named in the League Two Select by fellow Professional Footballers Association members at their annual awards dinner on Sunday night.

His selection came as something of a surprise, though, because he had missed a large chunk of the first two months of this campaign with an ankle injury, picked up in the derby at Wycombe.

But he has overcome that and produced some excellent displays going forward.

Wilder added: “He possibly needs to add a little more consistency to his play, as do many of the players, but on the day he’s more than a handful for any team and he’s an eye-catching player.

“But he’s got to keep improving, and hopefully he can.”

Batt, who has made 26 appearances this season, was delighted by the honour.

“I am very pleased to be given such a prestigious award,” he said. “It is something that I am very proud of.

“The team have been great, but we know we can get better.”

There were three players from champions-elect Chester-field, who visit Oxford this Saturday, in the League Two Select, including former U’s striker Craig Davies.

Centre half Jimmy Sangare and left back Anthony Tonkin were both named in the League Two team of the week following their fine displays in United’s 0-0 draw at Accrington on Saturday.

OXFORD United are holding their own awards night on Saturday, May 21, with supporters able to join management and members of the squad at a gala dinner.

Awards on the night include Player of the Year, Supporters’ Player of the Year, Goal of the Season and the Golden Boot.
