Oxford United midfielder Paul McLaren has signed a new contract, keeping him at the club next season.

The 34-year-old has been a consistent performer for United in the second half of this campaign since joining them on December 31.

And his decision to remain with Oxford for 2011-2012 is a big boost to U’s boss Chris Wilder, who has already earmarked the need for more experience in the camp.

McLaren certainly has that, with more than 500 League games under his belt, many of them in the Championship.

Wilder said: “Paul’s added something to the team after Christmas and he’s a good pro who will hopefully influence and affect people alongside him as well.

“He’s enjoyed his time here, and I’ve enjoyed working with him, and I’m glad we’ve got it all sorted out.”

The club and he had been in discussions about a new deal for a short while, but Wilder said the player did not take much persuading to sign.

“I think he’s really enjoyed the way he’s been treated, enjoyed the football club, and I’ve enjoyed watching him and the obvious qualities he brings to the side, and hopefully will do for the next year.”

McLaren brings a calmness to the midfield and is assured on the ball, and a fine passer.

The High Wycombe-born player began his career at Luton Town.

After 166 appearances for The Hatters, he then played for a series of northern clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham, Tranmere and Bradford, before returning to Prenton Park.

He joined Oxford after Tranmere mutually cancelled his contract.

Importantly, he has the respect of his fellow United players.

“He gets respect because of what he’s done in his career, and with the amount of games he’s played, and because of his personality,” Wilder said.

“As always, these signings are not just made on what they’ve done, it’s how they are as lads and how they see their future and what they want to acheive.

“He’s been disappointed, as have most of us, that we’ve not been able to sneak into the play-offs, and he’ll be determined, like we all will be, to keep improving for next year.”
