Alfie Potter feels Oxford United should have done better in their first season back in the Football League.

The winger, who returned to the team and scored the opening goal in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Wyc-ombe, believes the players should have produced more, despite their relative inexperience at League level.

“I think we’ve shown on our day we can compete with the best in this league,” he said.

“But on too many occasions we’ve let ourselves down, let the manager (Chris Wilder) down and everyone at the club.

“If we can put that right, we can be up there with the best.”

The draw against Wycombe epitomised Oxford’s season, with exciting attacking play undone by conceding goals and dropping unnecessary points.

“After going 2-0 up, it should have been three points for us,” Potter said after Saturday’s match.

“It’s happened on too many occasions this season and we need to put that right.

“I think we’ll be better for the experience next year. We’ve got a lot of players without much experience of this league.

“But we should have done better, I think. We’ve had plenty of opportunities to get in the play-offs and we’ve let ourselves down.”

Eleventh-placed United have not given up the ghost so far as the play-offs are concerned. But realistically, it’s not going to happen, unless a few more clubs above them, in addition to Torquay, get points deductions.

“We’ll keep going till the end of the season,” Potter insisted.

“If we don’t make it this year, we’ll hopefully come back next year stronger.”
