Top coach Manoj Parmar is embarking on a new project in Switzerland – but it’s not the top job he thought he had got.

The 44-year-old Thame cricketer, who has run a coaching academy in the town for the past 12 years, was under the impression that he was set to coach the Swiss national team this summer.

Now Switzerland is hardly a hotbed of international cricket, but it would have been a feather in the cap for former first-class Indian cricketer, whose main job is running a sports shop in Thame.

But after contacting the Swiss cricketing authorities, I discovered that Parmar’s role is limited to coaching the under 11 and 13 natinoal sides.

“It was a genuine misundersatanding,” said Parmar, who flies out at the end of April for a weekend of coaching youngsters.

“They told me it was a national team. But it does not matter at all.

“I’m still delighted by this new challenge. I’ll look forward to helping to nurture the raw talent.”

The job offer came from one of the Swiss junior coaches, Manish Jain, whom Parmar met at a wedding.

Jain’s colleague, Scott Poynton, the executive director of Swiss junior coaching, said: “Manoj is a smashing guy and we hope that this first weekend of coaching will lead to many more sessions this summer.” l ASTON Rowant will play host to the Women’s Natwest Quadrangular ODI series in July.
