Didcot Town skipper Jamie Heapy believes that boss Ady Williams has all the qualities needed to guide them to Premier Division survival.

Since the former Reading defender took over as boss in January, a first-game loss against Bashley was followed by an unbeaten run of six matches, the last of which was a 1-0 win against high-fliers Chesham on Saturday.

“Ady has done really well since he has come in and given the boys a bit of confidence and belief in themselves,” said Heapy, who made his 700th appearance for Town against Chesham “We’ve worked really hard in training and been able to take that onto the pitch.

“It was a good day, but to round it off with a win made it special.”

Heapy said: “It’s nice to get a few points. We’ve got Truro away on Saturday and that will be tough because they are hard-working and organised.

“I don’t care if it’s not the best game – we just want the three points.”

Heapy, 32, played for Didcot at every level before making his debut, aged 16, against Cirencester Town in Hellenic League Division 1.

“I played on the right side of midfield and my dad (John) played at left back,” said Heapy, who was released by Oxford United as a youngster.

“I don’t think I’ll make the 1,000 game mark, although it’s not long since my 500th which was 200 games ago.

“You just keep playing. As long as I stay fit, I haven’t thought about ending it.”

Heapy added: “Winning the Vase (in 2005) was massive and winning the Hellenic League.

“I also won a lot of cups and trophies and of course going up to the Premier Division.”

Heapy said Stuart Peace had been his most influential boss.

“He looked after me, made me skipper and was there when we won the Vase and the other cups and trophies,” said Heapy.

“Now we have Ady who hopefully has enough in him to keep us up and I think he does.

“He has lifted everybody both on and off the field. We’ve now got to keep it up.

“We don’t really talk about relegation. We are taking it one game at a time.

“We’ve got to keep working and get something from every game.”

Heapy added: “I live in Didcot, so there is no reason to play for anyone else.

“The club has been great to me and I’ll always be grateful for that. The chairman (John Bailey) has been excellent.”

Didcot midfielder Michael Alexis returns from a ban.

Williams added: “I’m very pleased with the way it’s going, the lads deserve all the credit.”
