Alchester head coach Chris Kimber says there is no way his players will ease up after securing promotion.

Saturday’s 26-0 home victory over Stow-on-the-Wold means only second-placed Slough can pip Alchester to the BB&O Premier Division title.

They are likely to win the league, defend their Oxfordshire Shield crown and are three wins away from Twickenham in the Senior Vase.

And Kimber said they are going all out for the title.

He said: “All the lads are so focused towards the end of the season.

“Every game is a cup final. There is no way we’ll take our foot off the gas.

“The first objective was to get promotion. Now it is to win our remaining two games in the league and get the title.

“We are pretty well equipped to go up into the next league.”

Alchester, who were formed after many players and officials left Bicester in 2008, will play in Southern Counties North next season, after losing just once in the league this campaign.

But as well as they have played, Kimber pointed to a bigger picture.

He said: “What has made this season for us is having a second XV and using a squad of 30 players in the first team.

“That shows how far we have come and how much depth we have got in the squad.

“We are getting a lot of players at training and everyone is enjoying it.

“You couldn’t have dreamt up how far we have come in two years of league rugby.

“We have matured beyond recognition.”

Kimber added: “We have got no history. We are making it up as we go on.”

John Thompson, who assists Kimber alongside Steve Coogan, said: “We got a wake-up call when we lost to Thatcham in January. That was the turning point.

“We don’t want older players coming down to us. I would rather have someone who is 20 or 21 who can fit in with the others.”
