Manager Chris Wilder described his Oxford United team as “a mug side” after they lost 3-1 at Lincoln last night.

Their play-off hopes were dealt a blow as they lost for the second game running, with poor defending and two own goals in a nightmare four minutes at Sincil Bank.

An angry Wilder, who has ordered his players back in for extra training this morning, said: “I don’t want to take anything away from Lincoln, but we beat ourselves tonight.

“We’re fast becoming a mug side. We controlled the game, I thought, and what did they have – three crosses?

“People who go and watch us now think we’re a soft touch. We play nice football, do some nice stuff, but have no killer instinct and conviction in the final third, and when teams put a few crosses on us, we can’t defend.

“So we’ll defend in the morning.

“We’ve got to get back to basics, we’ve got to stop crosses, get tackles in.

“I’ve only got Jake Wright in the back four who wants to put a tackle in.

“We had ten minutes of madness.”

Harry Worley crashed the ball into his goal from Delroy Facey’s shot in the 63rd minute. Facey’s shot may have been going in anyway, and the striker is likely to claim it.

But there was no doubting Anthony Tonkin’s own goal on 67 minutes, as he sliced an attempted clearance into his net in spectacular fashion.

“We self-destructed ton-ight,” Wilder added.

“No disrespect to Lincoln, but we’ve lost that game.”
