Oxford United legends Dave Langan and Joey Beauchamp will return to the club for a special testimonial game at the end of the season.

And the club hope it will make the last few days of the campaign even more exciting for supporters.

The game – being billed as Ireland v Rest of the World – will take place at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday, May 1.

That is 24 hours after United’s final scheduled home game of the season against Lincoln – although U’s followers will be hoping there could be one more home match to follow if Chris Wilder’s side make the League Two play-offs.

A host of former Irish internationals and ex-Oxford United teammates of both players will turn out, with confirmed players due to be announced at a later date.

Dublin-born Langan joined the U’s from Birmingham City in 1984 and went on to make 136 appearances for the club, winning 25 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

The full back was part of United’s victorious Milk Cup-winning team of 1986.

However, due to a succession of 11 operations on his knees and back, Langan is now registered disabled.

He said: “I have the fondest memories of Oxford United and their fantastic fans.

“My time at Oxford was the happiest of my career. I still remember the goal against Arsenal from 35 yards and the goal I scored against Shrewsbury to win us promotion to what is now the Premier League.

“The Milk Cup Final is here with me on tape. They were great, great days.

“I’m not sure if anyone remembers me playing anymore as it has been more than 20 years, but I always look forward to returning to the city and the match will be a good opportunity to catch up with many of my old colleagues and teammates.”

Beauchamp, who made 428 appearances for the U’s, scoring 77 goals, first began a match for them in 1989, playing his last in 2002.

The winger’s 35-yard goal against Blackpool in 1996 which launched the club to promotion earned him the accolade from supporters of ‘the best goal ever by an Oxford United player’.

“To have played for my hometown club, and the team I supported as a kid, for more than ten years is an absolute privilege,” he said.

“It’s a great time to have a testimonial with the club doing so well, and hopefully if they carry on their fine form, the match could coincide with a promotion party.”

A dinner and charity auction will be held after the match which fans will be able to attend.
