Kennington’s Steven Sheard lifted the Oxfordshire Open title by beating Wallingford’s Phil Collins in the final at Didcot Conservative Club, writes PETE EWINS.

Sheard (pictured) won both legs for a score of 17,390-8,630 to take the first prize of £120.

In the semi-finals, Sheard swept aside Oxon’s Gary Johnson 19,530-4,130, while Collins crushed Sussex’s Rick Dewdney 19,050-3,820.

Sheard had beaten Oxon’s Dennis Atkins 16,740-11,810 in the quarter-finals where Collins knocked out England No 1 Kevin Tunstall, from Sussex, 21,460-20,800.

Oxfordshire’s Ian Moss took the Plate singles 9,440-4,900 against Stuart Florey, also from Oxon.

l Vikings Club maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Johnsons Buildbase Oxford League Premier Section with a 4-1 home win over Comrades Club.

Alan Lacey (4,330), Alan Oliver (9,300, break 8,000), Bob Allsworth (7,800) and Ian Moss (6,300) struck for Vikings, with Simon Ellam (6,140) replying.

Kennington Club also won 4-1 at home to Section 1 leaders Masons B.

Keith Sheard (6,330) put Kennington ahead before Ernie Smith inflicted Steven Sheard’s first home defeat for three years with a 5,740-1,160 win.

Pauline Withey (9,720, breaks 5,320 and 4130), Mark Trafford (18,710, break 14,250) and Ian Gordon (4,530) completed Kennington’s victory.
