Oxford & District’s Katherine Hawes is through to the final stages of the English Indoor Bowling Association National Ladies Singles Championship.

The England international came through five matches to secure a last-16 tie against Clevedon’s Stefanie Branfield at Melton Mowbray next Wednesday.

In the zonal final, she beat Michelle Barlow (Riverain, Hitchin) 21-9 at Foxhill, Aylesbury.

That came after Hawes edged past Theresa Darnell-Langton (West Berks, Newbury) 21-9 in the area final.

Oxford & District’s Howard Watts takes on John McGuinness (Desborough, Maidenhead) in the men’s area singles final at West Berks tonight.

Watts pipped Don Savage (Slade, Buckingham) 21-19 in the semi-final, while McGuinness beat Robert Newman (Whiteknights, Reading) 21-17.

The winner goes through to the national final at Nottingham on Thursday, April 7.

An Oxford & District four, skipped by Watts, have also reached the area fours final.

His side of Eddie Pilgrim, Paul Comley and Nick Rae-Welsh squeezed past a Banbury Cross four, skipped by Mark Sykes, 19-18 in the last four.
