Big-fish fanatic Greg Iszatt, from North Oxford, had a close encounter with a crocodile before catching a fish most anglers only dream of – a big mahseer from southern India.
It was captured from the Cauvery River during the final moments of a ten-day trip organised by top angling writer John Bailey.
The 41-year-old had to follow the fish in a coracle, helped by ghillie Madaba, before jumping onto rocks where he noticed a 15ft crocodile in his path. Fortunately, it was preoccupied with an otter who was trying to steal her eggs.
Greg was worried that the rocks would sever the line, but Madabah came up trumps again, appearing with the coracle in the nick of time.
Jumping back onboard, they finally managed to get level with the fish and halt the run.
Greg controlled the last few powerful surges and the gleaming 54lb mahseer was theirs.
Greg said: “We were both completely blown away by the fight.”
