FRILFORD Heath edged out local rivals Oxford City 3-2 to reach the second round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.

In a very close match on Frilford’s windswept Blue Course, Paul Dolton beat Mark Walker, Paul Richardson saw off Andy Harris and Clive Brandram defeated Craig Wooton to secure the decisive home wins.

Graham Hoult and Bob Chivers gained City’s victories – over Davis Miller and Patrick Jobson respectively.

Chipping Norton also reach-ed the second round with a 4-1 victory over Broadway.

  • SHAUN Curtis and Simon Hickman claimed the Bicester’s Men’s Winter League title after climbing from sixth to first in the final round.

The pair carded 41 points to take top spot in the six-round event, while Ian Howlett and Don Rowlinson rose from third to second after scoring 39.

Richard Upton and Alistair MacPherson were biggest climbers – their round of 43 points taking them from 22 to third.

  • EDDIE Pepperell finished joint 21st in the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf, Georgia, USA.

The 20-year-old Drayton Park member carded rounds of 76, 73 and 77, which left him nine shots adrift of winner John Peterson.

  • THE OXFORDSHIRE are hosting free golf lessons during February and March.

Sessions for juniors aged eight to 18 begin on February 26 at 9am.

Adult lessons, for a six-week period, start at 1pm on the same day, with ladies only sessions beginning on March 2 at 11am.

All equipment is provided, while the adult and ladies only lessons come with free golf membership for April.

The club are also running a junior scholarship scheme for eight to 18-year-olds.
