Oxford Harlequins made hard work of their 17-3 home victory over Newton Abbot.

Quins scored three tries, but saw a number of other chances go begging.

Newton Abbot led with a penalty from full back Mike Saxton.

Quins hit back on 11 minutes when centre Martin Nutt scythed through the defence to convert his own try.

Lock Alan Purchase, hooker James Clarke and flanker Tim Knapp all impresssed for Quins, while the visitors had prop Danny Porte sin-binned on 37 minutes.

Nutt slotted a penalty on the stroke of half-time, having missed two earlier attempts.

A period of uncontested scrums ensued when Abbot’s replacement prop Nick Hammond was yellow-carded on 44 minutes.

Nutt fed wing Huw Jones to finish a fine team move for try No 2, which the former converted from the touchline.

Abbot fly half Andy Birkett was yellow-carded on the hour mark.

Quins’ fly half Joey Todd came on for his debut to become the first player to represent the club at all age groups from under seven upwards.

Chinnor overcame a competitive Cheltenham 18-7 at the Prince of Wales Stadium.

The visitors were missing captain Matt Hutchings, who is out for the season with a disc injury in his neck, so prop Joe Winpenny led the side.

Chinnor had a strong wind at their backs in the first half and took the lead with a penalty from fly half James Cathcart.

This followed a yellow card for Cheltenham’s Jack Davieswho batted away a pass from Chinnor wing Huw Morgan as his side looked set to score.

Cathcart’s 70-metre clearance set up try No 2, with centre Matt Goode powering over after a series of rucks.

With Cathcart converting this and adding a penalty, Chinnor led 13-0.

Cheltenham came out strongly after the break and lock Joe Garner drove over for Mike Wilcox to convert.

On 55 minutes, Chinnor made it safe when wing Baz Corpe picked up and accelerated over the line.
