ADY Williams says he can’t wait to get started after being made boss of Zamaretto Southern League Premier Division strugglers Didcot Town.

The former Reading and Wales international defender, 39, who took over following the resignation of Stuart Peace, said he was confident he could keep the Railwaymen up.

Didcot are two points from safety, though they could go bottom if rivals Windsor & Eton lose a battle against a winding-up order in the High Court tomorrow. Didcot have beaten Windsor twice this season, so those six points could be lost if Windsor’s record is expunged.

On Saturday, the new boss watched them lose 3-0 at Evesham, though he doesn’t take charge of his first game until Saturday when they host Bashley.

“It’s a challenge, I can’t deny that,” said Williams, who played 196 times for Reading.

“But I have never shirked a challenge as a player, a manager and as a fellow. I’m really looking forward to it.

“The No 1 priority is to keep Didcot in the Premier Division. I know a lot about Didcot, because when I was playing at Reading we always used to play them pre-season.

“I knew the manager had left and I wanted to get back into football, so it was a natural progression.

“When I took the job at Bedford (March 2010) with far fewer games to go, we stayed up in the Premier Division by winning the last game of the season.

“I believe the deal is until the end of the season and go from there, so I would be delighted if Didcot are still in the Premier Division next year.”

Williams, who takes his first training session tonight, added: “It’s all happened rather quickly and it would be wrong of me to bring people in.

“I’m not one of these people who demands this, that and the other when I go to a club. I want to see what we have got here first and if I feel we need to improve on that, then I will look at bringing someone in.

“Everybody will start with a blank piece of paper. That includes the players that haven’t been in the team.

“One thing I will do is to bring discipline to the side and some organisation.”

Oxford City give a late fitness test to Jack Ashton (ankle) ahead of tonight’s trip to Cambridge City.

City, who won 1-0 at Bedford at the weekend, are without Craig McIllwain (work), Dave Savage (rested) and injured trio Lee Steele, Adam Mekki and Jerome Anderson.

Boss Mike Ford said: “It’s a real test for us, but as long as we show complete determination and a desire not to lose, we will have no problem. And we did that on Saturday.”

Abingdon United could give a debut Yashwa Romeo when they travel to Clevedon in Division 1 South & West.

He is added to a squad, though Anaclet Odhiambo (ankle) and midfielder JP Mills (back) are injured.

North Leigh parade Josh Dutton-Black when they host Bridgwater after signing him from Didcot.

Matty Taylor and Alfie Saunders are unavailable.
