Melissa Hawtin missed out on a sixth successive win at the Oxfordshire Schools’ Cross Country Champion-ships as she finished runner-up to Headington’s Beth Swords at Radley College.

Hawtin, from Gosford Hill, had won twice at both junior and intermediate level before taking the senior girls’ crown 12 months ago.

But her hopes of completing the six-timer – and going one better than Oxford City AC clubmate Hannah England, who won five titles from 2001-2005 – were dashed when Swords stormed to victory in this year’s senior girls’ race over 4.1k.

It was an impressive performance by the Headington teenager, who had captured the intermediate crown 12 months ago, having finished second to Hawtin in that age group in 2009.

And in a repeat of 12 months ago, Swords’s super run also denied the Hawtins an amazing family treble as Melissa’s younger sisters, Lauren and Beth, won the intermediate and junior crowns.

Lauren Hawtin, second to Swords in the intermediate race over 3.4k last year, went one better this time to add to her 2008 junior title.

She took the honours from Connie McMillan (Warriner, Bloxham), who beat her in the junior race two years ago, with Imogen Kempton (St Helen & St Katharine, Abingdon) third.

Beth Hawtin retained her junior title in a repeat of last year’s one-two with Victoria Mobley (Tudor Hall) finishing runner-up in the 2.9k contest.

In the boys’ races, Abingdon School improved on last year’s team title double by recording a clean sweep.

However, they missed out on individual honours with Alistair Duff, the intermediate winner 12 months ago, going closest when runner-up to Jonathan Cornish (King Alfred’s Community & Sports College, Wantage) in the senior race over 7.5k.

George Miller (Cokethorpe, Witney) was third again.

Christian von Eitzen (European, Culham) retained his junior crown with victory over James Currah (Henry Box, Witney) in the 4.6k event.

And Matthieu Marshall (Cherwell, Oxford), runner-up to von Eitzen last year, went one better as he stepped up to the intermediate race over 5.8k, with Chris Hewitt (St Birinus, Didcot) second.

The top eight in each race now go on to represent Oxfordshire in the English Schools’ Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, on Saturday, March 19.
