Oxford United slipped to 13th in npower League Two after their 2-0 defeat at home to Southend United.
It was a disappointing start to 2011 for Chris Wilder's team after they ended last year with three successive wins.
Two first-half goals gave Southend the three points on an afternoon when the U's were "abject", according to their manager, Chris Wilder.
