Banbury Utd 2

(Martin 29, Maddox 78)

Chesham Utd 1

(Wales 5)

Banbury United came from behind to complete the double over their Buckinghamshire opponents on Saturday to climb into the top half of the Zamaretto Southern League Premier Division table.

And the victory was even more sweet following a serious-looking leg injury suffered by Ollie Stanbridge.

He was forced off after 20 minutes when an over-the-top challenge was missed by the referee and left the Banbury man in agony.

He was immediately substituted and later taken to Northampton General Hospital.

By this time, Banbury were already behind.

In the fifth minute, Chesham top-scorer Steve Wales picked up a loose ball 30 yards from goal, and went on a mazy run which culminated in a fine shot from the edge of the area, which flew past Joe Murrell into the net.

Four minutes later, David Stone, making his return debut after rejoining the club earlier in the week, was brought down in the penalty area.

Although both the referee and his assistant gave the foul, Banbury were incensed when they gave it outside the area. The free-kick came to nothing.

Two minutes later, Chesham could have gone further ahead when they were awarded a free-kick, 20 yards out, but Danny Talbot was unlucky when his excellent effort curled around the wall, only to come back off the crossbar.

After Stanbridge’s injury, Banbury got the equaliser in the 29th minute.

Joe Coleman sent a long free-kick over to Delroy Gordon wide on the left, and his volleyed pass into the middle was headed home by makeshift striker Marvin Martin from eight yards out.

The defender, who played up front a week earlier, was registering his second goal in as many games.

The second half was a battling affair, with Chesham winning the yellow card issue by four to one.

But Banbury refused to wilt, and while being under severe pressure for long periods, in the 78th minute, a great move sealed the points.

Stone brought it along the bye-line, past three defenders, before chipping into the middle where Robbie Maddox planted the ball into the back of the net.

Banbury Utd: Murrell, Stanbridge (Oulton 20 (Cray 73)), Maddox, Gordon, Learoyd, Farqharson, Coleman, Benjamin, Stone, Martin, Staff (Hynes 82).
