Last Sunday’s match diary took a bit of a battering, with several matches cancelled due to the icy conditions.

It wasn’t a case of it being too cold to fish, just that most venues were frozen solid.

Tackley Estates fished their latest match on the Cherwell at the Hogs Bottom, where the eight anglers found the river low and clear.

Only two of them caught, Anthony Alder winning the match with 19.15.0. He switched between bread and worm to net five chub, the best a new club record of 5.10.8.

Mick Dempsey legered bread and caught two chub for a second-placed 8.3.8.

The Jolly Anglers switched their match from Fairmile to their Town Waters because of the Head of the River rowing competition on the Thames.

Drawing the same peg as the week before, Phil Ansell topped the seven-man field with four chub for 11.2.0, all his fish falling to maggot-feeder.

Also on the same peg as the previous week, Martin MacDonald finished runner-up two chub for 6.0.0, again on maggot-feeder Steve Gray weighed in a chub of 5.0.0 on feeder for third.

Because of the rowing, Dorchester also moved their match from the Thames at Carmel College to a gin-clear River Thame.

It was hard work for the seven matchmen, but fish were caught and at the final whistle Lol Budd emerged the victor.

He used a groundbait-feeder with worm on the hook, tempting three chub for 5.14.0.

Dave Mitchell fished the pole with a maggot-feeder on the business end to land a 4.15.0 chub, enough for second place, while Rod Rose also caught a chub on maggot-feeder for 3.14.0 and third.

Sutton Courtenay fished their Lawson Cup on the Abingdon Town stretch of the Thames where nine members fished.

It was a struggle, with five blanks, and at the whistle, Richard Adams came out tops with a chub and a perch on ledgered lobworm for 5.11.0.

Pegged on the Ivy wall, Trevor Martin (Didcot Angling Centre) had to settle for second place with three chub for 5.10.8 on liquidised bread in a feeder and flake on the hook.

Using the same method, Gary Stafford was third with a 3.11.0 chub.

North Oxford were on the Cherwell at Wolfson for their Fair Rosamund Shield.

The seven anglers found it very hard and in fact only two of them had bites.

Jason Bean hit both his chances, two perch to 2lb on pole with worm on the hook, feeding chopped worm.

His winning weight was 3.11.0.

The only other fish caught was a 1.9.0 roach for Henry Clarke, who used the pole and punch, feeding liquidised bread.

Littlemore’s Thames Shield on the Channel produced just one fish from ten anglers.

Brian Hutchings caught it, a 4.9.0, chub on the waggler and maggot.
