Wallingford boosted their survival hopes with a 28-3 victory at bottom club Oakmeadians.

The visitors scored five tries to record only their third win of the season and climb to within a point of safety.

Wallingford director of rugby Martin Moran said: “The most important thing was that we took all five points as we set out to do and also denied Oakmeadians any bonus points.

“It was a workmanlike performance, but a much-needed win.”

Wallingford opened the scoring a with a penalty from fly half Oli Henderson, but Oakmeadians levelled in kind.

The visitors’ forward domimance was eventually rewarded when prop Paul Lewis battered his way over the line following a pass from scrum half Glenn Dearlove.

It was 8-3 at half-time, then after several five-metre scrums, Dearlove capitalised on great work from his pack to score try No 2.

Centre Dan Stalker won the race to touch down a third try.

Captain Ian Jeffreys was deemed to have knocked on as he chased centre Johnny Collett’s kick ahead.

But Jeffreys was soon on the scoresheet after squeezing over in the corner.

Wallingford’s final try saw full back Herry Venners and Stalker win a turnover before Chris Jenkins fed fellow wing Ralph Smith to race in from 20 metres.

Witney’s home game with High Wycombe was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Their next chance to play the match will be on February 12 or 13 – the same weekend that Witney are due to host Oxford Harlequins in the Oxfordshire Cup.
