THE Oxford Winter League moves to the Kennet and Avon Canal at Avington for tomorrow’s fifth round.

Last Sunday’s practice was fished by 48 in cold and cloudy conditions.

Ian Browne (Drennan GOT Baits) won with 19.12.0 from a well-known big-fish peg two above the middle lock. He caught mainly skimmers on chop and the pole at 12 metres.

Second was Richard Norris (Sensas A4) with 11.7.0 of perch on pole and chopped worm.

Tony Hobbs (Drennan GOT Baits) was third with 10.15.0. He had one large perch and two skimmers on chopped worm, plus roach on bloodworm.

Littlemore fished their S Denny Cup at Milton Pools, which was on form.

Brian Hutchings topped the 11-man field with 75.0.0 on a cold day that saw most anglers struggling. He had an all-carp net, with fish up to 8lb on the pole, alternating between corn and pellet.

Alan Campbell had a good hour midway through the match, catching eight carp on the pole with corn for a second-place 24.10.0, followed by Vernon Adams with 24.6.0 of small carp from the margins on pellet and bread.

Beehive AC fished their AS Scientific Shield at a very hard Lower Court, where the easterly wind killed sport for most, with only six from the 12 fishing weighing in.

Top spot went to Chris Dingle with 42.10.0, six carp to maggot-feeder, while Sean Percy was runner-up with carp and skimmers for 13.8.0 on maggot-feeder. Dave Simmons was third with four carp to method-feeder for 9.2.0.

The chub fed well at Wallingford for six Jolly Anglers on their Oxford Reach.

Tony Clemson triumphed with 19.0.0, comprising 21 chub on maggot-feeder.

Phil Ansell had two chub for 7.10.0, one of them going 4.8.0, on maggot- feeder for second, and Frank Butler was third with 7.1.0 – one decent chub, plus five chublets on liquidised bread and flake.

Oxford Bus AC took on Masons on their school waters on the Cherwell, with five turning out for the busmen and seven for Masons.

Mark Robinson (Masons) took the honours with an impressive net of roach and the odd perch, weighing in 16.13.0 on stick float with punch.

Anthony Tompkins (Oxford Bus) used a pole with bread and had another net of redfins worth a second-placed 15.11.0, followed by Dave Pether (Masons), who fished bread and caught roach for 9.8.0.

A couple of good perch were caught in the match. Pete Clarke had one of 2.9.0 and Terry Yates another of 2.2.0 and the total weight of fish was an impressive 75.6.0.

There has got to be something wrong if seven anglers fish in a line and only one catches, but that’s what happened in the Tackley match on the Cherwell.

Whatever the reason, Mick Dempsey wasn’t worried as he weighed a net of roach going 16.11.10 on pole, alternating between maggot and punch.

The Lechlade Marina Winter League was fished by 12 and produced a close finish.

At the final whistle, Paul Woodley edged out Les Tibbetts with 11.10.0, a mixed bag of roach, perch, skimmers, bleak, ruffe and gudgeon. He started on the whip and later went onto the pole with maggot and chopped worm.

Tibbetts caught roach on punch and perch on the chop to finish an ounce behind, while Nick Maynard weighed in 9.0.0 of roach and perch on punch and chop for third.

Thirteen North Oxford members fished the Oxford Canal at King’s Bridge. Downstream from the bridge it was a struggle, while upstream it fished well.

Jason Bean drew the brambles and had 8.3.0 of perch on worm over chop for top spot.

Feeding chopped worm and fishing red maggot over the top, Sonnie Ayres was second with a mixed bag of 6.2.0, and third with 3.7.0 was Dave Britnell.

Nineteen anglers fished Cuddesdon Mill VAA’s open at Drayton Bridge on the Thame, which was low, clear and hard work.

Tony Sexton won with three chub on stick and maggot for 8.3.0, including a cracking specimen of 6.1.0.

Using pole with maggot, Richard Cantwell was runner-up with three little chub for 1.5.0, and third with 1.1.0 was Lionel Knight.
