Abingdon Squash and Racketball club youngster Joe Brooke has set his sights on success in the Tecnifibre British under 17 Junior Championships in Manchester later this month.

Brooke, 15, recently climbed to No 3 in the England under 15 squash rankings and played in the world championships and home countries’ internationals.

Clubmate Tom Wellstead, 17, also won the county age group boys title and represented the South-East of England under 17 team.

It has been a year of success for the club which won the Oxfordshire Team League Division 1 title in the men’s and ladies’ categories.

Abingdon’s men edged out Wallingford in an exciting play-off featuring among others, Abingdon’s Mark Cairns (ex-world top 10 player) and Wallingford’s Scott Handley, Oxfordshire’s No 1 and ex-world top 30 player.

The club are keen to build on their success and continue to develop its thriving junior section under club coach, Guy Tupper.

Meanwhile, they have been hosting a series of exciting exhibition matches.

These featured three of the world’s top ten players – James Willstrop, who with Nick Matthew, won the the final of the Commonweath Games doubles final in India, Peter Barker and Daryl Selby, as well as top-20 player Joey Barrington.

It’s not just the young members that are doing well at Abingdon.

Club member Brian Phillips showed that age is no barrier to sporting prowess when he won the over 70s category at the World Masters Championship in Cologne, Germany.

It followed up his victory in last year’s World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia.

Now Phillips is hoping to add the British title to his collection.
