Chris Ives took victory in round two of the Angling Times Winter League, fished by a healthy contingent of 50 anglers on Medley, Channel and Folly stretches of the Thames.

After overnight frost and no rain for a week, it was feared that this could be a gruelling contest.

The sections on Medley were dire, but the rest of the sections fished well.

Ives (Sensas A4) put 32.06.00 on the scales.

Chris was pegged on the middle of the Chnnel and struggled at the start, but a switch to waggler and maggot after two hours saw the peg come alive.

He had nine chub up to four pounds, only losing one.

Together with five pounds of perch, this was enough to take victory.

In second place was John Beesley (Drennan GOT Baits).

Pegged just above the winner, John weighed in 30.06.00, including 16 pounds of roach on a 12m pole and maggot over groundbait and joker.

Switching to waggler, John also caught three chub for 14 pounds, the biggest going over six pounds.

Carl Eland (Drennan GOT Baits) was third with 26.10.00.

Carl was pegged on the bottom end of the channel and caught all roach on the pole and caster over groundbait and joker.

Switching to waggler and maggot, he topped up his catch with more roach.

Team scores: 1 Drennan GOT Baits 51pts, 2 Sensas A4 45.

There was a good turn-out of 16 for Tackley’s Pairs Cup held at Boddington Reservoir.

Steven Malone weighed in 45.04.00 of carp caught on the method feeder and pellet to take victory.

Mick Merry and Anthony Alder shared second place, both putting 27.08.00 of carp on the scales, and it was again the method feeder which did the business.

In third spot was Frank Malone with 26.04.00, catching carp on the method and roach on the pole and maggot.

Mick and Frank won the Pairs Cup.

The Thames was in good form for the Jolly Anglers’ club match, fished by 13.

Dick Edmunds used a maggot feeder to land 12 chub for a winning weight of 27.00.00.

Phil Ansell went for the roach, catching 72 red fins weighing 18.12.00, taking all his fish on waggler and maggot feeding hemp.

Martin MacDonald finished in third place with 10.13.00.

Another water which fished well after a hard frost was the Oxford Waltonian match held on the Thame at Holton Mill, fished by 13.

Switching between pole and the stick float with maggot, Ray Ellis netted five chub, the best going 4lb 12oz, ending the match with 18.12.00.

Jason Smith was second 14.15.00 of bits caught on either the pole or whip with maggot.

In third place with 11.15.00 was Dave Webber.

Cuddesdon Mill VAA had 19 anglers turn out for their match on the Thame at Warren Barn.

It was tough going as the frost affected the result, but Tony Coffin, fishing the pole and maggot, took a chub and a few bits to win with 04.05.00.

Using lob worm on a straight bomb, Geoff Ring landed three perch and a small Jack pike for a second place 02.06.00.

Keith Nash was third with 02.04.00.
