Leon McKenzie (pictured) struck a 21-minute hat-trick in the first half for Northampton Town last week, yet still ended on the losing side.

There used to be half a dozen ex-Oxford players at Northampton, and ex-Cobblers men at the Kassam Stadium.

Billy Turley, Marco Gabbiadini, Chris Willmott, Chris Hargreaves, James Hunt, Eric Sabin, Richard Walker, Chris Carruthers, Jamie Hand, Gavin Johnson and Joe Burnell are just some to have played for both clubs.

But there are not many now.

United winger Mitchell Cole spent two months on loan at Sixfields, playing eight times and scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory against Millwall.

When Northampton last played at the Kassam Stadium, in September 2003, goals from Steve Basham (2) and Dean Whitehead gave United a 3-0 win.

That proved to be the final game for manager Martin Wilkinson, with his team languishing in 16th place in League Two.

Colin Calderwood replaced Wilkinson and brought about a big improvement. And with Sabin contributing some crucial goals (before he was to later join Oxford), they finished sixth, losing out to Mansfield in the play-offs.

They were promoted in 2006, and dropped back down again in 2009.
