The Oxford Winter League practice for round two was fished by 40 anglers on the bottom end of Medley, Channel and Folly on the Thames, which was once again on good form.

Fished in summer-like temperatures but with a strong easterly wind, it was the narrower Channel and Folly sections that produced.

Dan Varney (Drennan GOT Bait) had a day to remember on the top end of the Channel. The roach moved in over his groundbait at 12 metres, and he caught them throughout on caster for a winning weight of 35.14.0.

Second was John Beesley (Drennan GOT Bait) with 30.0.0. He was also pegged on the Channel, but towards the bottom end, and caught 46 hybrids, plus some perch. Paul Passmore (Turners Tackle) was third with 19.10.0.

Coldstone fished their latest match at Lower Court Farm and although the 13 anglers fished in dull, dank conditions, the fish were not put off.

Mark Rivett was top man with 45.8.0 of carp on paste down the edge, pipping Steve Arthurs with 44.12.0 of carp and skimmers on double maggot and worm and maggot over hemp.

Brian Ballard finished third with 32.0.0 of carp on luncheon meat.

Beehive AC fished their Beehive Cup fourth leg at Cheney Manor with a rule that any carp over a pound only counted as a pound.

Martin Wilkinson had three, plus 13lb of roach and perch, to waggler and maggot for a winning 15.0.0.

Steve Ferris caught roach and perch on pole and maggot for a second-placed 14.13.0, and third was Tim Belcher, who had six carp, plus 7.9.0 of roach and perch for 13.9.0.

Fifteen fished and the winner of the Beehive Cup was Kevin Jeacock.

Littlemore were on the the Thames at Sandford, where ten anglers contested their Secretary’s Cup.

Fittingly, the silverware went to secretary Alan Campbell, who weighed in a net of mainly roach and a few dace for 22.12.0 on waggler with double bronze maggot, feeding hemp.

Another net of redfins worth 16.12.0 gave Brian Hutchings second on waggler, hemp and tares, while John Wicks was third with 12.14.0.

The Cherwell at ‘The School’ once again produced the goods for the latest Oxford Bus AC match, the five anglers weighing in a total of 44.2.0.

Using pole with maggot, Pete Clarke caught bream, roach and perch for a winning 13.14.0, pipping Anthony Tompkins by six ounces. He had 13.8.0 of roach and perch. Kevin Dirke weighed in a third-placed 7.0.0.

Oxford Waltonian’s J Campden Cup on the Thame at Wheatley Bridge was fished by eight.

Tony Gee (Acorn Angling) finished in top spot with 11.15.0, comprising two chub, dace, roach and perch on stick float with bronze maggot.

Alan Gee (Acorn Angling) fished pole and maggot to tempt a decent chub, plus perch (the best weighing 2.7.0) for 10.10.0 and second place, while Paul Armstrong was third with 7.10.0 on pole and maggot.

Ten anglers fished Sutton Courtenay’s J Mullins/R Croucher Memorial on the Thames at Otneys.

Enzi Granito won with 11.6.0, a couple of bream, plus skimmers, on groundbait feeder with worm.

John Percival had 7.12.0 on feeder with a worm and maggot cocktail for second, pipping Alan Hewer’s 7.4.0.

Kidlington staged an inter-club match against Clanfield and also fished their Paul Jackman Cup at New Bridge, 20 matchmen turning out in all.

Jason Bean lifted the cup with a net of skimmers and roach on punch for 8.3.0, followed by Colin Betteridge with 7.14.0 of decent perch caught on chopped worm, beating Brian Curtis’s net of perch by three ounces.

Team result: Clanfield 33.2.0, Kidlington 27.2.8.
