WIGGY Smith rolled back the years for Henry Candy’s Wantage stables with a game victory at Leicester. The 11-year-old battled on well for Dane O’Neill to beat Sagredo by a nose in a handicap over a mile and two furlongs.

It was his first win since 2008, and left Candy musing that he had never trained an older winner.

Wiggy Smith could run again, but the Kingstone Warren handler re-ported that retirement may soon be on the cards.

Mata Keranjang finally opened his account for Paul Cole’s What-combe stables with a smooth success at Thirsk.

The three-year-old colt, who finished second to Xtension in the Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood a year ago, had failed to break his duck in nine subsequent attempts.

But, sent off at odds of 1-4 for a mile maiden, he got off the mark with a two-lengths win from Tarooq under Silvestre de Sousa.

Cole also struck at Leicester when None Shall Sleep made a winning debut in a six-furlong maiden.

Alan Munro was a late replacement on the two-year-old colt. He made the most of his chance, bringing the son of Invincible Spirit ho-me by a length and three-quarters.

Cole sent Nimue to Thirsk on Saturday, and saw his three-year-old ease home by eight lengths.

Mick Channon was another local handler to enjoy success at the Midlands track, with Excellent Day scoring for his West Ilsley stables.

Chris Catlin was aboard as the three-year-old filly beat Eywa by a length and a quarter in a seven-furlong selling stakes.

Channon also saddled an across-the-card double on Sunday. Rigo-lleto won at Chester under Sam Hitchcott, while closer to home, Arabian Star and Munro claimed the Grundon Recycle Nursery at Newbury.
