Oxford is buzzing ahead of the new Football League season.

Those are the vibes from United chairman Kelvin Thomas ahead of the new campaign.

And the U’s chief admits he can’t wait.

Although United start with an away game at Burton on Saturday, two home matches in the following seven days have whetted the appetite of the supporters.

“We have already seen excellent ticket sales for the first few games of the season,” Thomas said.

“There is a fantastic buzz around the city and we want to make sure that we get as many fans out there for the first few games to really show some intent for the upcoming season.

“There are a lot of people talking about this first home game, so we think it’s going to be a really big match.”

Some people have tipped Oxford to win the league, and others fancy them for relegation – something that amuses Thomas.

“It has been quite funny seeing where people think we are going to finish,” he said. “The range of opinions shows that it is a little unknown at this point.

“We don’t have a budget that is going to frighten the top teams, so we know we won’t be running away with anything.

“We don’t want people to get carried away. Even though teams that have gone up from the Conference have done well in the past, only Exeter have gone straight up again in the last five years, so that is a one in ten statistic.

“We have to make sure we are positive and confident about ourselves, but also realistic in that we have stepped up a level and it will be a tough season.

“With everyone’s backing, we do hope that we can challenge, however.”

He added: “I think these are really exciting times. I think we are really moving forward as a club and I think on and off the pitch we have worked tremendously hard to get to where we are.

“Being back in the Football League gives the football club the credibility it deserves, the profile that a club like this should have and the exposure which will help us drive the club forward.

“We can’t wait to get started now.”
