Oxford University lightweight Annalie De Vries is celebrating a double triumph after becoming a national champion on both sides of the North Sea.

The History and Politics student claimed the ABAE Class B national novices crown at Portsmouth with two determined points wins.

De Vries overcame highly fancied Prisca Pannone from the Lynn gym in London to book her place in the final against Boarshaw southpaw Charlotte Brown.

Once again she proved far too precise for her Northern rival, landing jabs with accurate right hands to rack up the points.

The English title followed a trip to her native Holland where De Vries overcame reigning champion Desiree Asmus to capture the Dutch women’s lightweight title with another polished points win.

The Oxford student had started the clash as the underdog, but she proved far too agile and determined for her more experienced rival and won in style.

De Vries said: “I never thought it would happen – titles in two countries – and I could not be happier.

“I have to thank my coach Dave Mace – it is his guidance that has got me this far.

Mace, who coaches at both Oxford University and Abingdon, has had a memorable season.

He also guided Lucy Cook, 14, to the finals of the inaugural ABA schoolgirls championships, also staged at Portsmouth.

The Abingdon bantam-weight proved too strong for Billie Madden in the semi final – prompting standing counts with two powerful right hands.

With the Portsmouth girl’s resistance eroded, the referee stepped in to call a halt midway through the second round.

Cook then faced Terri-Leigh Harper in the final and there was little to separate the pair until the final minute of the clash.

A late rally from her rival saw the bout just swing in her favour.

Coach Mace said: “Lucy really boxed to her full potential and I could not ask any more from the girl.

“Both Annalie and Lucy have surpassed all expectations this year and I could not be more proud.

There was further Oxfordshire success for Jasmine Yeates, from the Windrush Valley ABC in Witney, won a gold medal in the junior class five 69kg category.

Meanwhile, Chelsea Allen from Thames Valley ABC won silver in junior the class 5 54k.
