The co-founder of the world famous Duckworth-Lewis Method for recalculating scores in weather-affected matches, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Tony Lewis, a former lecturer at Oxford Brookes University Business School, who lives in Headington, has been honoured “for his services to mathematics and cricket.”

“I’m honoured and gratified that our contribution to cricket has been recognised in this way,” said Lewis 67, who lectured in quantitative research methods at Brookes from 1999-2008.

He was formerly a lecturer at the University of the West of England where the Duckworth-Lewis method originated in the mid-1990s from a project with then colleague, Frank Duckworth, who is also awarded an MBE.

The arrival of Twenty20 cricket has forced the pair to reassess the D-L method as it is known.

“We keep a track on the game and have already made two modifications to the original project,” said Lewis.
