Oxfordshire Under 17s kicked off their two-day season with a convincing five-wicket victory on first innings against Wiltshire at Warminster.

Winning the toss, Oxon elected to bowl first with conditions overcast and humid.

But the home side got off to a solid start with a 33-run stand for the first wicket.

However, after George Seacole made the breakthrough, Wiltshire struggled, particularly against the swing of Jack Stimpson, who returned fine figures of 4-24.

With Jack Simpson bowling an incredible 14 maidens in 18 overs, Wiltshire lost wickets regularly, Simpson finishing with three and Richard Simpson two.

Wiltshire were bowled out for just 109, and with conditions improving, it proved no problem for Oxon.

Sam Ryan was the pick of the batsmen in the reply, top-scoring with 82, including 13 boundaries.

Opener Harry Smith bludgeoned his way to 46, including three towering sixes, while there were useful contributions down the order from Jack Simpson, Richard Simpson, Alex Bowles and Jack Stimpson.

Oxon passed Wiltshire’s total with five wickets down, and batted on to 285, a lead of 176 runs.

Batting again in benign conditions, Wiltshire fared much better second time around.

They reached 220-6, with Oxon using the afternoon session to try a number of bowling options.
