Rising star William Buick may be known for having a cool head – but he admits to being excited about his first ride in the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who lived with his father, Walter, at Letcombe Regis, near Wantage, before joining Newmarket trainer John Gosden this season, will be aboard 12-1 shot Azmeel for his boss.
Buick will also be in action in the Investec Oaks and the Investec Coronation Cup on Friday when he rides Gertrude Bell and High Heeled respectively for Gosden.
“It is going to be two exciting days for the stable,” he said. “We are all pretty excited.”
And looking forward to his Derby ride aboard Dee Stakes winner Azmeel, Buick added: “He likes the ground to be quick. He is a good-moving horse with a low action. He would not want soft ground.
“He is in good form. He is improving all the time. He has come on for the race at Chester, so hopefully he will be ready when the day comes.”
