Oxford United boss Chris Wilder has told the Oxford Mail website who he would cut from the England World Cup party on Tuesday – and the list is very similar to the one Fabio Capello is expected to announce.

The England manager names his final 23-man squad in the next few hours.

Wilder, who guided the U’s to promotion back to the Football League in his first full season in charge, said he would have no hesitation in axeing Matthew Upson, Michael Dawson, Leighton Baines, Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

More controversially, though, he would take Darren Bent rather than Emile Heskey as his fourth striker.

And he would have Aston Villa’s former Liverpool and Blackburn left back Stephen Warnock ahead of the Everton No 3 Baines.

Giving his verdict before England’s friendlies in the last week against Mexico and Japan, Wilder said: “What you want is cover for every position.

“You’ve got that in defence with Terry, Ferdinand and King, and you have Jamie Carragher, who can cover at right back. I don’t rate Upson.

“You’ve got quick wide players in Theo Walcott and Aaron Lennon, so you don’t need Wright-Phillips.

“You’ve got to go with four forwards haven’t you? I’d leave Heskey out if it was me.

“But I’d definitely take Joe Cole.”

Chelsea midfielder Cole did his World Cup hopes a power of good with an impressive second-half cameo in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Japan in Graz.

When asked if Cole would make his final squad, Capello said: “You must wait and see. I know Joe Cole very well. He is fresh because he did not play a lot of games.”

The Italian added: “I know my squad for South Africa. It is the same 23 that was always in my mind.”
