George Stevens won the most promising boxer award at Oxford Boxing Academy’s end of season presentations The 15-year-old lightwelter weight was chosen by head coach Faz Keyani in recognition of his increased tactical awareness and maturity over the past season.
Keyani said: “George gave up a promising rugby career with Wasps to concentrate on boxing this year.
“His hard work and dedication to the sport has been noticed by all staff at the Academy. He is a strong, disciplined young man, who is a role model to other junior members.”
The clubman-of-the-year award went to Stuart Walford, for mentoring of the younger boxers.
Two of the Academy’s junior boxers were in action in Milton Keynes.
Bradley Townsend, 15, was on top form, beating Terry O’Reilly, of the host gym, decisively for the second time.
Debutant Yasir Afzal unleashed precise and powerful punches on Mark Macdonagh, of Berinsfield ABC, forcing the referee to stop the contest in the second round.
