Wide receiver Steve Belcher scored a sizzling 70-yard touchdown as Oxford Saints came out on top 7-0 in a war of attrition against South Wales Warriors in BAFA Community League Division 1.

In the first game at their new Abingdon RFC home, Saints finally broke the deadlock seven minutes from time.

With the ball on their own 30-yard line, quarterback Jay Taylor dropped back before delivering a perfect pass to Belcher, who powered through one tackler before surging clear.

Outpacing the Warriors defence, he raced in for the touchdown, before slotting the extra point.

South Wales had one last chance to tie the scores, with quarterback Lance Godfrey setting off on a jinking run only for Andrew Day to scythe him down a yard short, which effectively ended the game.

It gave Saints two wins from as many games, but it only came after a real struggle.

The first half was a dour affair with both teams struggling to get going.

The one highlight was a 38-yard bomb from Taylor to wide receiver Sam Armstrong.

The match didn’t spark into life until the second half when big tackles from Chris Ellis and Dean Bryan on consecutive plays foiled Warriors’ attempts to run it into the end zone.

Warriors kept Saints under pressure and Graeme Cribbes had a touchdown disallowed for holding.

The visitors continued in the ascendancy, but missed a field goal to the right.

Oxford’s next game is away to Nottingham Caesers on Sunday, May 23.
