Luton chairman Nick Owen has vowed to hold an investigation into the scenes which followed his side’s failed attempt to return to the Football League.

The Hatters lost 1-0 to York in the other semi-final second leg at Kenilworth Road, with a 47th-minute goal from former Oxford United player Chris Carruthers ensuring a 2-0 aggregate victory and a meeting with his old teammates at Wembley.

However, their victory was marred by a pitch invasion after the final whistle, which left York’s players needing the aid of stewards and police to escape to the sanctuary of the dressing rooms, via the away end, as missiles were thrown.

Owen said: “It’s absolutely dreadful, I can’t condone it – to be honest it’s shattering.

“There will be an investigation by us and no doubt by the authorities, but it doesn’t look good for Luton.

“Hopefully it gets cleared up and there are no serious repercussions.”

York chairman Jason McGill said: “It’s taken the gloss off the win. We won’t be able to celebrate until we’re going home.”

He claimed striker Rich-ard Brodie was struck by a pound coin and added: “I've not witnessed anything like that since I’ve been in football – it’s very difficult to take.”

Minstermen manager Martin Foyle, the former Oxford striker, added: “Give the stewards credit, they took the players into the away end. It was a scary time, but the players have come through it safely.”
