All roads lead to Wembley for Oxford United fans after Chris Wilder’s team reached the Blue Square Premier play-off final amid amazing scenes at the Kassam Stadium.

Joyous celebrations marked the U’s 2-0 semi-final, second leg win over Rushden as they booked a trip to the national stadium on Sunday, May 16 with a 3-1 aggregate scoreline.

Delirious supporters invaded the pitch at the finish to hail a stunning victory – and an amazing achievement as the side have responded with great strength of character after the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion.

It will be Oxford United’s first appearance at Wembley since they won the Milk Cup in 1986.

They will face York City, who knocked out play-off favourites Luton Town 2-0 on aggregate in the other semi-final, which was marred by crowd trouble.

Superb goals, in the space of four minutes early in the second half, from Matt Green and James Constable, confirmed United’s march to The Arch, where they may have 30,000 followers cheering them on.

“It just shows what doing well for this football club means for everybody in and around the club,” said delighted U’s boss Wilder, following euphoric scenes when players and staff acknowledged the part the fans played with a lap of honour.

“We’ve got to enjoy days like this, when the people are on the pitch and giving us unbelievable support. They’ve done that all season.

“The players have been fantastic, and the staff, but it’s been an even better day for the fans.”

Wilder also praised the work of chairman Kelvin Thomas in making the dream possible.

“There’s been a big turnaround in the fortunes of the club, and he deserves massive credit for that.

“We are desperate to reward people with some success, and we have the opportunity of doing that.”

He added: “I think we deserved the win today. But the job’s not over yet. We’ve got to make sure we finish it off.”

Thomas agreed. “This was great for the pundits, great for the fans, now we need to go on to the next step.

“But there was nothing you could say that went wrong today, it went perfectly.

“We’ve proved as a club we can handle the big occasion, and the team can handle the big occasion.”
